Looking Around Hanoi Jan 23

The first view of the city over the largest lake, Hoan Kiem Lake.

Going in to Tram Quoc Pagoda.

A view inside the wall.

The Tram Quoc Pagoda.

You see these Kumquat trees everywhere right now because the are important to the New Year celebrations coming up on February third and fourth.

Looking out behind the pagoda.

This is a Bodhi tree.

A view of the Mausoleum housing the body of Ho Chi Minh. There were no cameras allowed into the building. We went through and viewed the body.

This is the One Pillar Pagoda.

Here we are in the grounds of Van Mieu temple, the temple of literature. It has a statue of Confucius where people can pray.

These turtles are supporting tablets containing the names of scholars who studied here.
The turtle is the symbol of longevity and it is said you will have long life if you rub their head.

This is a street in the old quarter. All the streets are narrow like this and full of motor bikes and sometimes cars.

I quite liked the old Quarter and the rest of the city looks nice with lots more space and lots of lakes and green space.

At the Chuc Mun Nam Noi Temple a woman is burning paper effigies to aid the deceased.

A temple gate.

This little fellow is a water puppet. They are a foot and a half to two feet high and are operated using under water rods.

At the Museum of Ethnology they have a water puppet show. Here are the people who provide the voices for the puppets. They are sitting beside the stage.

The water puppet stage.

Here you see a man in hip waders getting the next puppets ready. They work from behind the curtain.

I am going to Ha Long Bay tomorrow. It is cold here so there won't be any swimming but I can hardly wait to see it.
